What is AYSO Extra?

Extra logo

AYSO Extra is a soccer program geared to those players and families who want a higher level of competition and training, but enjoy the guidelines provided under the umbrella of AYSO, rather than club-soccer option. Extra teams will be formed by participating Regions within Area 10S (along with teams from other Areas in Section 10). The Extra teams will play each other during the traditional season (10-14 games) and will have playoffs at the end of the season in addition to possible intersectional tournaments. Please keep in mind that the Extra program will run separate from the regular season schedule and Extra players will not be eligible for regional All-Stars play.

Which Divisions will have Teams?

The number of teams and age divisions will differ from Region to Region. Our Board has approved starting the Extra Program with 8 teams this year (one team in each division for Girls and Boys): U-10, U-11, U-12, U-13 with the possibility of adding a U-14 age division if there is enough interest. In future years there will be consideration given to the adding of more age divisions (this program allows team to be formed up to U-19).

How will players be chosen for the Extra Program?

Players who are interested in playing on an Extra team will need to fill out a Region 678 Extra Tryout form and attend tryouts for the respective age divisions (Tryout forms will be posted on our website and available at all walk-in registrations). Tryout locations and dates will be posted on our webpage soon. The players will be selected by a team of neutral evaluators during these tryouts. We expect to hold tryouts over a two week period beginning in mid-May but we are still working out all of the scheduling details.

Which players are eligible to participate in the Extra team tryouts/selection process?

Any player can participate in the Extra tryout sessions as long as they are of the appropriate age for the division they are trying out for. If the player did not play on an AYSO team in 2009, a $25 fee will be charged to cover the cost of insurance and administration of the tryouts. The fee must be paid before a tryout can be attended. If a player participated in an AYSO team in 2009, they are already covered by our insurance.

What will it cost?

We estimate that the fees for the Fall Season of the Extra program will be between $475 - $500. This includes a standard Region 678 registration fee of $115. The additional fees are used to pay for a second uniform, postseason tournament fees and fees for professional trainers. Coaches are strictly unpaid volunteers and the administration of the program is covered within the $115 Region 678 Registration fee.

If the player has already registered and paid for the Fall 2010 primary program, only the Extra program fees are required and the remaining fees of $360 - $385 will need to be paid ($475 - $500 less the $115 Region 678 registration fee).

How long will the season last?

The Fall season will begin in August (like we do with the regular season) with games and league cup playoffs running through November/December. In addition, there will be opportunities for intersectional tournaments which we expect to take place in January and February.

Will there be tournaments after the Fall season?

Yes. Extra teams will be allowed to participate in pre-season tournaments and AYSO invitational tournaments, which will take place between November and June. The expected cost to enter these tournaments will run $35-$45 per player per tournament. Participation in these spring tournaments is not included in the Registration fees and will need to be funded completely by the team. This is the same process as our current Tournament Teams that you may be aware of.

How many players will be on a team?

The total number of players will depend on the age division:

  • U10: 9 players
  • U11: 12 players
  • U12: 12 players
  • U13: 14-15 players
  • U14: 14-15 players

What benefits does the Extra program offer versus Club?

The Extra program is covered by the AYSO umbrella and all applicable philosophies and guidelines. Coaches and Extra team players will be subject to a neutral selection process because our Region wants to ensure that we offer the highest possible competition level. These teams will receive professional training and clinics will be made available. All of this is being offered at a fraction of the cost that a Club team would charge.

The biggest benefit however is the 6 philosophies that have made AYSO so successful in the past 44 years, as AYSO's focus is on the kids playing this great sport and not on a balance sheet which needs to be positive:

  • Everyone plays (3/4 minimum)
  • Balanced Teams (balanced through competitive bracketing)
  • Open Registration
  • Positive Coaching
  • Good Sportsmanship
  • Player Development
